Dr. Coles will review the prevalence of alcohol and drug use by pregnant  women in the United States and will then highlight the risks associated  with the use of alcohol and other drugs for the developing infant and  child including both the impact of prenatal exposure development and  behavior as well as factors that are associated with maternal substance  use.

About the Presenter

Dr. Coles is director of the Center for Maternal Substance Abuse and Child Development (MSACD) at Emory University. The Center includes both MotherToBaby.GA, a teratology information service that provides counseling and information about exposure to prescription and illicit drugs as well as alcohol and the Emory Neurobehavioral and Exposure Clinic (ENEC) that serves children 0 to 21 with prenatal exposures.  In addition to her clinical care of affected children, Dr. Coles has carried out research of the developmental and behavioral effects of prenatal exposure and is currently principal investigator on a multi-site, longitudinal study of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders in middle age.
